A surprising find in the De Trafford of Trafford estate collection [ref no DDTR] has been records of the Palace Theatre located on Duke Street, Barrow in Furness. The records include plans, specifications, accounts & correspondence, mostly concerning the refurbishment of the theatre and its conversion to a 'talkie' cinema in the early 1930s.
These designs for proscenium curtains (i.e. curtains which hang between the stage & auditorium) date from 1931. Unfortunately, we don’t know which, if any, of these designs were chosen, but that hasn't stopped us from picking our favourites.
The curtains were designed by W.S. Hodkinson & Co of Spear Street, Manchester. To have one of these designs made would have cost between £104 and £130, depending upon the design chosen and the finish required.
This article from Bioscope records the reopening of the Palace in August 1931.
